iWeb FAQ - Useful applications to build a website
iWebFAQ.org
A list of software/applications found to be useful while building a website in iWeb (and not-iWeb). Please tell us other applications you found to be useful...
First let me thank Roddy for giving me the idea to build a page collecting useful applications and for his application suggestions.
Second thanks to everybody suggesting other apps
Third, I will not provide any support to this applications

1. FTP (how FTP works)

Short description: FTP application (especially recommended for UTF-8 special characters)

Review: This is the FTP application I like the most. I don’t just love it because it’s made in Switzerland. I also love it because it works great and it’s freeware/donationware and it’s the one I found to be working best. It has everything an FTP application needs. To me it’s fantastic.

Short description: Make your pages more efficient thus loading faster
Link: http://www.ragesw.com/products/optimize-web-sites.html
Review: iWeb websites are usually slow loading websites since they are full of graphics. WebCrusher is a really good piece of software which makes your pages pages much lighter hence loading faster without seeing any loss of quality in the images and the pages in general. My english version of the iWeb FAQ has a size of 52,1 MB (made of 1765 files), after I run it through WebCrusher the size was 28,1 MB. It saved 24 MB which is about 46% of the original size of the website! This without any noticeable change in its appearance. No noticeable loss in quality of the pictures, ...
The only downside is that it is quite expansive and it took about 20 minutes to optimize the whole website. So for me it’s not a good idea to run the whole website through it every time I publish. It’s better to just run in on the changed pages. Of course my website is much bigger in size than the average websites so for most of you it will process your site faster. I love it but hope it will get faster.
3. SEARCH ENGINES

Short description: Automatically build and submit Google Sitemaps
Link: http://guimkie.com/category/imap/
Review: iMap is an application made by Guimkie which is really easy to use but also a bit limited since it works only with iWeb made websites. However it does its job. To get iMap click here.

Short description: Automatically build and submit Google Sitemaps
Link: http://www.ragesw.com/products/googlesitemap.html
Review: I think this application is excellent. It’s more expansive than iMap but it is less limited as well. It will produce your sitemap, upload it and verify it with Google, Yahoo and Ask.com. In addition to that it is really fast and the good thing about it is that you can use it for non-iWeb created websites too (MediaWiki, Wordpress Blogs, Dreamweaver, or whatever). So it’s certainly worth the money. It’s also recommend if you have multiple websites. To get Rage Sitemap Automator click here.

Short description: Add meta-tags to your pages, alt tags (alternative text for your photos) and more...
Link: http://www.ragesw.com/products/iweb-seo-tool.html
Review: I personally don’t believe that search engines are still looking for meta description tags. But it’s up to you to make the decision whether you want to add them or not. The alternative text for images/photos instead is certainly useful.
4. ALTERNATIVE HTML
Short description: Very good and useful Find & Replace tool
Link: http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/24832
Review: I love this application and use it to add every html code I have to add to the site since I don’t like HTML Snippets at all (have a look at the Alternative HTML FAQ if you wonder why). It’s very easy to use, it’s very fast and just works.

Short description: A great tool for post-publishing html editing
Link: http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/18529
Review: I personally don’t like to go into the html code of the pages and make manual changes to every time I publish. Why do it manually if you can have it done automatically and much faster? However it’s certainly a good application if you want to edit html codes of your pages post-publishing.
5. iWeb ALLROUNDER APPS

Short description: What is it good for? For a lot of things!

6. MULTIPLE WEBSITES MANAGER

Short description: Split, merge and manage multiple Domain.sites(2) files
Link: http://versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/29679
Review: Works good. It’s incredibly useful to merge Domain files. However I prefer to just double-click the domain file I want to edit.

Short description: Manage multiple Domain.sites(2) files
Link: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/31966
Review: I don’t recommend to use this application. First because there’s a freeware application called iWebSites which does exactly the same thing but is freeware or donationware. Secondly because it moves your Domain files from the default folder and puts them somewhere else in another file. Applications acting like that should be avoided.
